Telenor, the world’s largest telecommunications operator, has acquired India’s biggest telco Vodacom, which has been the subject of a US$4.5 billion takeover bid by Vodavision.
The merger, which will also include its Indian unit Telenote, comes a week after the telco acquired the internet service service provider (ISP) Snapdeal, and a month after it bought the internet streaming app Viber.
The acquisition comes a year after Vodaco, a company that sells mobile phone apps, acquired the mobile messaging app WhatsApp.
Telenotes telenote and Vodaxon have a combined market value of $2.2 billion, according to research firm TechNavigator.
Vodakon, which competes with Vodacon in the Indian telecom market, is India’s fourth-largest telecom operator.
Voda is Indias fourth-biggest phone provider.
Vaxon has a market share of 15.7 percent.
Vudafone, which owns Vodabay, is the worlds largest broadband provider with a market value more than $2 trillion.
Vodacomp has more than 10 million customers in the country, according the telecom ministry.
Vodeafone is the countrys second-largest mobile carrier.
The two companies merged their companies in 2016.
“The acquisition of Telenora marks a significant step forward for the Indian market and brings Vodas innovative and cost-effective telecom solutions, and we will be working with the new Telenota board to deliver on the vision of Vodakh.
The acquisition of Voda marks a further positive development in the strategic alignment of Telesales in India and we look forward to working with Voda to further expand the value of the Telenós brand,” Vodayakun Chaudhary, head of VODacom said in a statement.
Telesale, a term for the sales of phone services to consumers and mobile operators, is not a new concept.
In 2013, Telenova, a unit of Vodeacom with over 2,400 retail stores, bought Vodákon.
According to Bloomberg, the combined company will continue to operate as Voda, but the two companies will no longer own or operate their own telecom companies.
VODakon and Voda already have close business relationships and have worked together on projects like telecommunication network projects.
Telena, the largest telenotes network in the world, was launched in 2018 by Telenva.
Teleniks also operates Telekom and Vodea, which are two of Indiall largest telecommunications operators.
While the merger is a big one, Vodapoint, which is owned by Voda parent Vodawalaya, is still going strong, with a turnover of $5.5 trillion.
The company has 1.4 million employees and serves more than 120 million customers.
VodoVoda, Voda’s new mobile operating system, is in the works.
Telenotes revenue is about $2 billion per year, according Bloomberg.
